Kylian Mbappe came to Real Madrid’s rescue once again, scoring twice to secure a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory against Olympique Marseille in their Champions League opener.
Xabi Alonso’s side endured a nightmare start, losing Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury within three minutes before Timothy Weah put Marseille ahead following clever work from Mason Greenwood.
Real Madrid hit back quickly as Rodrygo Goes won a penalty, converted coolly by Mbappe to level the score. Despite chances at both ends – with Aubameyang, Mastantuono, and Mbappe all going close – the deadlock held into the second half.
The match took another twist when Dani Carvajal was sent off for a headbutt on goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, leaving Madrid down to 10 men. Yet even under pressure, Alonso kept faith with his attack. That decision paid off when Vinicius Junior’s run forced a penalty after a handball by Facundo Medina. Mbappe stepped up again, firing home his 50th goal for the club.
Madrid survived a late Marseille push, including two wasted chances from Greenwood, to secure all three points despite finishing the game a man down.
Real Madrid had 28 shots (15 on target) on the night, but Alonso will be concerned about wasted opportunities and Alexander-Arnold’s injury. Still, Mbappe’s brilliance ensured their European campaign began on a winning note.
