Strategic partners to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), GTI Group, join millions of football fans across the world in mourning the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, who died on July 3, 2025, at the age of 61 after a brief illness.

In a press statement issued on Friday, July 4, 2025, GTI’s Head of Media and Publicity, Andrew Ekejiuba, expressed deep sadness over the loss of one of Nigeria’s most iconic footballers.
“With heavy hearts, GTI Group mourns the passing of one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers. Peter Rufai was more than a shot-stopper—he was a national hero, a role model, and a true ambassador of the beautiful game,” Ekejiuba said.

Rufai, fondly remembered as Dodo Mayana, was a key figure in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory and earned 65 caps for the national team. He also proudly represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, helping the country reach the second round in both tournaments.
“His breathtaking saves, commanding presence, and dedication to excellence elevated Nigeria’s standing on the global football stage,” Ekejiuba added.
GTI extends its heartfelt condolences to the Rufai family, the Nigeria Football Federation, and the entire football fraternity.
“Rufai was a national treasure whose legacy will endure in the hearts of fans and in the dreams of every young Nigerian goalkeeper he inspired. We pray his gentle soul rests in perfect peace and that his memory continues to light the path for future generations of football stars,” the statement concluded.
