
Nigerian badminton sensation Obasanmi Olajumoke, popularly known as ‘Jumong Obas,’ has shared her remarkable journey from an aspiring nurse to a decorated badminton champion.
In an exclusive chat with Ijoba Sports News, the Osun-born athlete reflected on how her passion for the sport began.
A Journey That Started in Primary School
“I started playing badminton 13 years ago when I was 11 years old, still in primary school. A coach saw potential in me and recommended the sport. I followed through with it, and today, I’m so glad I chose badminton,” Obasanmi recounted.
Inspired by a Badminton Legend
She draws inspiration from Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei, whom she describes as a phenomenal player she aspires to emulate.
Parental Influence & Career Choices
Obasanmi revealed that her parents, her biggest supporters, originally envisioned a career in medicine for her. However, destiny had other plans, and she has since become a professional badminton player, representing Nigeria on the international stage.

A Call for More Support in Badminton
She urged the Nigerian government to increase funding for the Badminton Federation, emphasizing that inadequate financial support remains a major challenge for players like herself.
