Nigeria’s top-ranked squash player, Busayo Olatunji, has set her sights on breaking into the world’s top 50 rankings.
In an exclusive interview with Ijoba Sports News, the Ekiti-born athlete expressed her determination to climb higher in the global rankings, vowing to remain relentless in her pursuit.
“Squash is a game I love deeply, and I train every day with the goal of reaching the top 50 in the world rankings. I have strong faith in myself, and I know I will achieve it. It’s only a matter of time. With dedication and hard work, success will come, and I will make my country proud,” she said.
Currently ranked 148th in the world, Busayo began her squash journey in 2009 at the age of 10 under the guidance of her elder sister, Olatunji Yemisi. By 13, she had already made her mark, winning her first gold medal at the National Junior Open in Ibadan in 2011.
She progressed to the Under-19 category by 2014, securing gold at the MMA Under-19 Championship in Lagos. After dominating the junior circuit for five years, she transitioned to the senior category in 2016. Turning professional in 2018, she has since claimed multiple national titles.
Busayo has consistently showcased her talent on the international stage, competing in numerous WSF and PSA tournaments, including the Lagos Prime Atlantic Squash Open, Yellow Dot Squash Open, Namibia Squash Open, Lagos State Squash Classics, and the HE Chief Olusegun Obasanjo National Squash Championship.
In October 2024, she won her second PSA title, triumphing at the John Hett Sports Foundation Open.
Encouraging young squash players, Busayo urged them to stay focused and dedicated. She also called on Nigerians, sports stakeholders, and journalists to support female athletes across the country.
